Things To Do
Versova Beach
Situated perfectly within the Andheri beach neighborhood in Mumbai, lies the famous Versova Beach. Naturally, like most of the beaches in Mumbai, the Arabian Sea paints horizons of most of the beaches, and the same is true for Versova Beach. Taking into account that Versova Beach is a beach; there is naturally a large fishing population that resides in the area; especially the Kolis. While the Kolis do make up a large chunk of the population, the area is filled with diversity. The beach was formerly known as Vesawe, which in Marathi means "Rest." This was significant because Versova Beach is where Chatrapati's navy would rest.
The Versova Beach area is home to a great deal of festivals that lighten up the community. The Kolis celebrate one celebration in particular known as Coconut Day, in which the Kolis please the Holi, the Sea God, with offerings. Versova beach is also covered with enormous rocks that help guard structures against the waves. The downside to this beach in particular is that the actual beach vanishes during high tide, which limits the amount of activity that can be done at the beach. Everything has to be scheduled during times in which the tide is not high.
Taking into account what was just said above; this beach is not as lit up as other beaches such as Juhu or Chowpatty Beaches. At most any other beach, there would be food stands, vendors, light fixtures, and other similar items; however, at Versova Beach, there is none of that due to the fact that it would get washed away as soon as high tide came. Versova Beach is popular however, among couples who are looking for a little private time. The huge rocks that are put in place to protect the buildings, also provide a perfect place for a little intimate time with a significant other.
