Mumbai Religions
Taking a more in depth look at the Indian city of Mumbai, it is obvious that religion plays an absolutely vital role in the lives of most any resident of the city. The Portuguese, long ago, were key players in establishing a religious foundation in Mumbai with devotion being cast towards the Roman Catholic Church. However, as time has passed, so have the religious practices of Mumbai. In contemporary Mumbai, there are numerous different religions that are actively practiced.

Just like Mumbai has an official language, there is also a major religion that is practiced. The major religion that is practiced, not only in just Mumbai, but in areas all over India, is Hinduism. Hinduism, along with Buddhism, Jainism, and Sikhism, all have their birthplaces in India. The bulk of India's population is devoted to the Hindu religion, with around eighty percent of the population being followers of the faith.

So many other religions also share a home in Mumbai, such as Christianity, Islam, Jainism, Buddhism, Sikhism, Judaism, and Zoroastrianism. Christianity and the Islamic faith have always had strong roots in Mumbai due to the diverse history of the city. Most of the other religions also hold a little piece of Mumbai history; however they may not be as old as the Christian and Islamic faiths. The following of the Muslim faith in India is the second largest following worldwide for that faith.

The great thing about India is that all of these religions are completely tolerated and most cities, including Mumbai, are strong advocates for all of the different religious holidays and festivals. Naturally there are going to be some individuals or groups of individuals that are a little less tolerant of different faiths, but usually religious tolerance is practiced all throughout Mumbai.
