Mumbai Languages
Mumbai is definitely an Indian city that has shared in a truly colorful history. Archaeologists have determined that Mumbai has been populated since the Stone Age, being ruled by Islamic rulers, Portuguese rulers, and British rulers to name a few. Taking into consideration the diversity that Mumbai has been through, it comes as no surprise that there is more than one different language that is spoken throughout, not only Mumbai, but India as well.

While there are a number of different languages spoken throughout Mumbai, like any other country, there is typically an official language. The official language of Mumbai is referred to as Marathi (probably in reference to the name of the state that Mumbai is capitol of, Maharashtra). Bombaiya Hindi or Bombay Hindi is sometimes used as a slang form of the regular Marathi language, mainly because it aims to simplify the language by using punctuations, abbreviations, and shortened words. Marathi is spoken in abundance throughout all of Mumbai, but it does share a place with a few other languages as well.

Hindi is another one of the more popular languages spoken throughout Mumbai, and does in fact; make up thirty percent of the dialect used throughout Mumbai. Another interesting aspect to note about Hindi is that not only is it widely spoken throughout Mumbai, but it is the national language of India.

Considering that India does quite a bit of business with European countries, as well as the United States, it should come as no surprise that English is like a second language in the metropolitan city of Mumbai. Marathi and Hindi are both widely used in the streets and marketplaces scattered throughout Mumbai, but English is spoken in the streets, as well as in national, international, and political settings.
