Things To Do
Mount Mary Church
The Catholic faith is well known and followed throughout Mumbai, and India for that matter. St Michael's Church is one of the churches in Mumbai that is actively used by the Catholic Faith, but another famous Mumbai church is Mount Mary Church. This church caters more towards the Roman Catholic denomination. The name "Mount Mary Church," could arguably be considered a nickname as the real name is "The Basilica of Our Lady of the Mount." However, Mount Mary Church can say with pride that it receives more visitors than most any other church in Mumbai.
Mount Mary Church is located in the Bandra suburb of Mumbai. Mount Mary Church is fairly old, being built way back in 1640. For some reason or another, many people believe that Mount Mary Church is the oldest church in Mumbai, but that would be false because St. Michael's Church was originally built in the 1500s. Sadly, the church was badly damaged in the 1700s by Arab pirates, who even went as far as to vandalize and damage the statue of the Mother Mary, just to get a gold object that was held in her hand. However, the church was rebuilt, and a new statue was brought in during the mid-1700s.
However, the contemporary Mount Mary Church is thriving and sits more than 70 meters above sea level. Naturally, the sea that it towers over is none other than the Arabian Sea, which provides a beautiful backdrop for the church. The bulk of the church's visitors occur in September, because of the Bandra Fair. During this time, many people flock to the shrine to worship the Virgin Mary. Mary's birthday is celebrated on September, 8, in which a huge celebration known as the "Feast of St. Mary" occurs. For those of the catholic denomination, Mount Mary Church is definitely worth seeing upon visiting Mumbai.
