Malabar Hill
Located in Mumbai, seated as the highest location in the city, is Malabar Hill; a residential area that is noted for its upscale class of residents. Malabar Hill was founded quite some time ago by the Silhara Kings, who built their famous and still famous today, Walkeshwar Temple. The temple had to be rebuilt in the early 1700s due to the fact that the temple was destroyed by the Portuguese. While Walkeshwar Temple was the first temple built on Malabar Hill, around twenty other temples popped up on Malabar Hill before the 1900s.
While the Walkeshwar Temple is an exceptionally popular feature of Malabar Hill today, connected to the temple lies yet another famous aspect of the hill; Banganga Tank. The reason for Banganga Tank being so popular is that legend says that Rama (from the Ramayana) shot an arrow into the ground and water started pouring out, where Rama was able to get a drink. The same hole that Rama shot into the ground is still said to fill the tank. There are actually three parks located on Malabar Hill as well, which are Kamala Nehru Park, Priyadarshini Park, and the Hanging Gardens of Mumbai. A lot of people do not know that Malabar Hill is also home to many different religious structures that still stand as well.
Marine Drive is an extremely wealthy part of Mumbai, where wealthy people and celebrities reside; however, Malabar Hill has earned its reputation as being one of the most high-class residential areas in Mumbai. Many famous faces of Mumbai have upscale houses on Malabar Hill, including both the Governor and the Chief Minister of the state. There are many areas around the world with some of the most expensive houses, however a good deal of these houses are located right in Mumbai, on Malabar Hill.
