Mahalaxmi Temple
For those of the Hindu faith, Mumbai is definitely the city to be, not just because the Hindu denomination has the largest population in Mumbai, but because there are many Hindu temples scattered throughout the city. Most of the temples in Mumbai are fairly old and considered historical landmarks. One such temple, Mahalaxmi Temple, is well over 200 years old and would definitely fall into the "ancient" category. Mahalaxmi Temple probably receives more visitors every year than any other temple residing in Mumbai. If you would like to be one of those visitors, the temple is located right on B. Desai Road.

As mentioned above, Mahalaxmi Temple is well over 200 years old, with the construction of the temple being completed in 1785. It may be hard to tell for some, but based on the name, it is distinguishable that the temple was built to commemorate the Goddess Lakshmi. Mahalaxmi Temple, in fact, almost was not built because the location on which it was to be built encountered problems. However, the lead engineer on the project was visited by Mahalakshmi in a dream, in which she told him to build a structure commemorated to her at the exact same location that had previously been cancelled. In 1785, the Mahalaxmi Temple was completed.

Mahalaxmi Temple is partially devoted to the Goddess of Wealth, Mahalakshmi, which should not be too terribly hard to tell upon entering the temple. Many are amazed simply at the primary entryway into the temple, which is ornately decorated. Like most temples, Mahalaxmi Temple is home to a shrine of some sorts, this one dedicated to three different gods. One can even buy offerings to the Goddess via one of the vendor stalls that is located in the temple. Lastly, while the waves and tide were the reason the temple almost was not built, they now form a beautiful backdrop to the temple.
