Things To Do
Jehangir Art Gallery
Art has always been a major part of Mumbai, and India as a whole. Mumbai has an abundance of art galleries and museums scattered all over the place. In fact, there are celebrations that take place annually, such as the Kala Ghoda Festival, which is catered mainly to art and music. One of the most famous art galleries in Mumbai is the Jehangir Art Gallery which draws in a massive number of visitors every single year. The Jehangir Art Gallery is conveniently located behind the Prince of Wales Museum, in the Kala Ghoda region of South Mumbai.
Compared to most of the other landmarks in Mumbai, which are sometimes several hundred years old, the Jehangir Art Gallery, is actually fairly recent. Cowasji Jehangir not only founded the gallery, but also donated all of the costs needed to build the gallery, and in 1952, the entire gallery was successfully completed. The designing of the Jehangir Art Gallery is credited to G.M. Bhuta. The gallery is managed solely by the Bombay Art Society and, to this day, remains one of the most famous art galleries in all of India. Typically, one will find art that is more on the contemporary side, rather than the antiquated side.
If you have not figured out yet, art is obviously the main attraction at the Jehangir Art Gallery. However, while there are some older works of art located at the gallery, the bulk of the art is more modern. Every year, there are many different art and photography exhibitions held, which is never a problem because the gallery is home to four exhibition halls. The Jehangir Art Gallery holds pretty convenient hours, being open Monday through Friday, from 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. For anyone who is looking to gain a little more insight into the Indian world of art, the Jehangir Art Gallery is definitely the place to be.
