Ganesh Chaturthi Festival
One of the most popular celebrations in Mumbai, by far, is Ganesh Chaturthi; sometimes the holiday is referred to as Ganesha Chaturthi or Vinayaka Chaturthi. However, Mumbai is not the only place that this holiday is celebrated; if fact, Ganesh Chaturthi is celebrated all over India, as well as the United States, Canada. Essentially, any country or city with a Hindu population will most likely celebrate some form of Ganesh Chaturthi as it is a celebration of the son of Shiva, Ganesha; which can also be depicted from the celebration's name.

Prosperity, wisdom, and good fortune are all properties believed to be possessed by Ganesha. The celebration is celebrated for usually ten days falling between late August and late September. During this somewhat brief ten day period, most Hindu people believe that Ganesha is actually amongst his followers for these ten days. Another interesting note about Ganesh Chaturthi is that Ganesha's birthday is amongst these days, which is why the celebration takes place in the first place. The festival has no actual origin date; however it can be traced back to some very old, very prominent dynasties, being made into a large, public celebration in 1893.

Ganesh Chaturthi is a massive Hindu celebration, especially considering the fact that typically, large celebrities show up at some of these celebrations. One can always tell when Ganesh Chaturthi is approaching because of all the statues and sculptures of Ganesha that suddenly start showing up for sale; craftsman and artisans see the celebration a prime time to sell their clay sculptures. Statues are put up in most houses and all public locations, with a specifically dressed priest that comes around preaching mantras; this supposedly brings the statue to life. Ganesh Chaturthi is also marked by festive lights, garland, flowers, and other decorative items symbolic to the occasion.
