Chhatrapati Shivaji Terminus
Chhatrapati Shivaji Terminus is a pretty well-known historical landmark, seated nicely in the Indian metropolis of Mumbai. Since the time of its construction, Chhatrapati Shivaji Terminus has always been a train station, and even today it is one of the busiest train stations in India. The train station is owned by the Central Railways and is actually Central Railway's headquarters. Upon visiting Mumbai, one might also hear Chhatrapati Shivaji Terminus referred to as Bombay VT or CST.
Chhatrapati Shivaji Terminus was built in the cusp of 1887, proceeding into 1888. The entire station was designed completely by an architect named Frederick William Stevens. However, the design came partly from Axel Haig, who was the draughtsman behind a sketch that Stevens used to model Chhatrapati Shivaji Terminus after. Another interesting aspect to note about the train station is that it was formerly named Victoria Terminus, after Empress Victoria. After ten long years of construction, the station finally opened in 1887.
Gothic (Victorian) style architecture was used to construct Chhatrapati Shivaji Terminus. To be more precise, this elaborate structure blends perfectly the architecture styles of both traditional India and Victorian Gothic. Students of the Bombay School of Art, at the time, were responsible for most of the elaborate, ornate features of Chhatrapati Shivaji Terminus; including tiling, railings made of iron and brass, staircases, and so much more.
More recently however, the previously known Victoria Terminus was called Mumbai VT, only later to be called Chhatrapati Shivaji Terminus. The World Heritage Committee of UNESCO nominated Chhatrapati Shivaji Terminus as a World Heritage Site in 2004. Slumdog Millionaire, an award winning Bollywood film, also featured footage of the station. Unfortunately, in 2008, Chhatrapati Shivaji Terminus was home to a horrible terrorist attack in which terrorists, armed with AK-47s and grenades, entered the station; fifty people were killed in the attack.
