Mumbai is known for quite a few things when it comes to attracting visitors, tourists, and vacation seekers. However, there is one part of Mumbai entertainment that never fails to entertain audiences from around the world. This entertainment phenomenon is Mumbai's film industry which has been dubbed Bollywood. The name "Bollywood" was given in reference to Mumbai's former name of Bombay, and the America's popular film center, Hollywood. For some people, the term "Bollywood" is fairly new; however, that name has been around since the 1970's, which is when the Indian film industry became the largest producer of film.
Bollywood is a huge factor in the modern film industry, producing quite a few movies that make it big from an international standpoint, such as 'Slumdog Millionaire." Indian cinema is widely shaped by a number of different influences, but these influences are what make Bollywood so popular not only among Mumbai and India, but the entire world. Some of the greatest Indian films incorporate the greatest imaginations, which are said to be influenced, largely in part, by the Mahabharata and the Ramayana. Indian films are also highly influenced by Sanskrit drama, which basically meant that the movies incorporated song, dance, and a happy ending. There are many other influences on Bollywood, but naturally one of the largest influences remains that of Hollywood.
As for Bollywood being influential, many new musical films emerged in the Western world that either came directly from Bollywood, or was directly influenced by Bollywood. Moulin Rouge, a popular film that came out in 2001, came from Bollywood influences, incorporating largely the aspects of Sanskrit drama. Many other popular Western world films also derived from Bollywood Influences, such as the Phantom of the Opera, Sweeney Todd, Hairspray, and a multitude of others.
