Bhau Daji Lad Museum
There are a ton of different museums and galleries in Mumbai, but do you know which of these museums is the oldest? It should not be too hard to guess considering the subject of this article; that's right, it is the Bhau Daji Lad Museum. This museum goes back more than a century and a half, and yet it still stands today; in fact, in 2007, the Bhau Daji Lad Museum celebrated its 150th anniversary. While the museum is the oldest in Mumbai, it has not changed the fact that it receives a substantial amount of visitors, from all over the world.
The Bhau Daji Lad Museum was not known by its name since it was constructed. The museum's original name was the Victoria and Albert Museum. Also, the museum was not always a formal museum; in fact, when the building was first erected, it was essentially a safe house for a variety of different art treasures. The original building was built in 1855; however it was rebuilt in 1862, not being finished until 1871. Finally, the museum was opened to the public is 1872. The museum was called the Victoria and Albert Museum for the better part of its history, undergoing a name change in 1975, to its present name of Bhau Daji Lad Museum.
Today, the Bhau Daji Lad Museum is home to a multitude of different archaeological treasures, as well as historical artifacts of its home city, Mumbai. The museum is also home to a number of different galleries including the Origins of Mumbai Founders', Industrial Arts, Kamalnayan Bajaj Special Exhibitions, etc. There is also abroad spectrum of paintings from the 19th century that reside at the Bhau Daji Lad Museum.
