Banganga Festival
When it comes to Indian culture, there are rather many different festivals and celebrations that take place all throughout the year. However, while Mumbai plays a huge role in most of the celebrations, the Banganga Festival mainly takes place in Mumbai. To be more precise, the bulk of the celebration takes place in the South Mumbai area, the Malabar Hills area, and surrounding areas. The festival can credit its huge success to the efforts put forth by the Maharashtra Tourism Development Corporation who tirelessly plan it every year; most likely as an attempt to draw in more visitors than the preceding year.
The festival would not even exist without the historical Banganga Tank, which is seated within the famous Walkeshwar Temple; both landmarks drawing in a massive amount of visitors every year. Banganga Tank is believed to be the spot in which Lord Rama (main character in the epic tale, "The Ramayana.") becomes thirsty. In an effort to relieve his mouth of this thirst, Rama draws his bow and shoots an arrow directly into the ground. Water emerges from the arrow wound in the ground, in which Rama takes a drink. The Banganga Tank was supposedly built atop this location, some believing that the water in the tank comes from the hole that Rama made when he shot the arrow.
Just as with any Indian festivity, or any festivity for that matter, the Banganga festival is usually host to bright, colorful lights that adorn the city. Flowers and other celebratory decorations are also ornaments in the streets during this festival. The Banganga festival, foremost, is a music festival in which many brilliant artists and bands pleasure the area with their musical sounds and talents. Many different musical acts, from famous performances to up and coming artists, are all highlights of the Banganga festival, and promise to be a great show for musical advocates.
